Conference on Ancient Didactic Poetry (Rostock, 19.-21. Febr. 2004). The conference papers are published in:

Marietta Horster, Christiane Reitz (edd.), Wissensvermittlung in dichterischer Gestalt (Palingenesia Vol. 85), Stuttgart 2005 ISBN 3-515-08698-6

Manuals, documentary books, technical literature, compendia – expert knowledge and erudition, these catchwords are associated with ancient “technical authors”.

Classicists do not agree about the definition of the genre, about the intentions of the authors, about the envisaged readers. Most modern studies on ancient technical literature deal with their contents: the knowledge of nature in Greece and Rome, water management, medical history etc.

In autumn 2001 a conference on “Ancient technical authors as writers: literary discourse and social context” was held at the University of Rostock, Germany. The proceedings are published as “Antike Fachschriftsteller als Literaten. Literarischer Diskurs und sozialer Kontext, ed. by Marietta Horster, Christane Reitz (Palingenesia Vol. 80), Steiner Verlag, Stuttgart 2003 (www.dav-buchhandlung.de).

The idea to have a web page on the subject was born during the conference.

Some methodological problems are common to all types of technical literature irrespective their subject:

-the conception of the terms “experts & expertism”
-the social context of expertism
-the reception of expert knowledge in literature, esp. poetry
-the transmission of knowledge and expertise

These are some of the aspects we want to discuss on this web page, in conferences and publications.
